I'm reading Proverbs these days, and as usual enjoying the slightly off-beat translation in The Message. This verse was part of this morning's chunk of wisdom.
When right-living people bless the city, it flourishes;
evil talk turns it into a ghost town in no time. (Prov 11:11)
It reminded me of Glasgow's motto: "Let Glasgow Flourish". Proverbs reminds us of a way to see that happen. Blessing our town or city, focussing on the good things that God has given to it & its people, talking it up, not running it down. This is an upward spiral – the beginnings of community transformation.
When I think of Glasgow, my home town, some things that come to mind are the parks, the grand buildings, the optimistic outlook, people you don't know chatting to you in a queue, a spirit of inventiveness. These are some of the things I missed during my self-imposed exile in England, and some of the things I'm taking time to notice today.
How would you bless your town?
